Galvarino was a Chilean
Native American warrior who, when captured by the Spaniards, had both his hands
amputated as an example to other natives who had ideas about fighting against the
foreign conquerors. After returning to his tribe, Galvarino begged to head up an
uprising and had knives strapped to his stumps. Leading his men into battle,
the fearless warrior stated that he would ‘tear them apart with my teeth’ if
his knives were to come loose during combat.
